Ford Ranger vs. Toyota Tacoma Ford of Dalton

The midsize pickup truck is the new rockstar in the truck world, with more and more people looking for affordable and powerful utility trucks with all the comfort and amenities of a sedan or SUV. Enter the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Tacoma. Ford recently rereleased a freshly designed Ranger after taking it off the market in 2012, and it offers smart competition to the Tacoma, which has dominated the midsize market for a few years. Now, consumers have more options than ever. Check out the differences between these two great pickups and see which stands out in features and power.

Exterior and Engine Performance

The Toyota Tacoma is a powerful midsize truck with two engine options: a 2.7L 4-cylinder 159 hp engine producing up to 180 lb. ft. of torque and a 3.5L V-6 278-hp engine that produces 265 lb. ft. of torque. Both options are equipped with a 6-speed transmission, either manual or automatic. The V-6 engine offers a towing capacity up to 6,800 lbs. and a max payload of 1,620 lbs., though the I4’s towing capacity is cut almost in half at 3,500 lbs. It comes with standard with rear-wheel drive but offers four-wheel drive, which most drivers prefer, and gets decent fuel efficiency with 20 mpg city/24 mpg hwy. The Tacoma’s truck bed ranges between 60.5 and 72.8 inches.

The Ranger offers a single engine option, but it is fine tuned to what pickup owners need. Its 2.3L EcoBoost engine outpaces all other gas-powered pickups in its class in performance and is the most fuel-efficient pickup in its class as well. Every model of the Ranger offers an incredible towing capacity of 7,500 lbs., best in its class, and a max payload of 1,860 lbs. Amazingly, it doesn’t affect the fuel efficiency with 21 mpg city/26 mpg hwy. All Ranger models are equipped with a 10-speed transmission and a part-time four-wheel drive system. The Ranger’s bed is just slightly longer than the Tacoma’s, ranging between 61 and 74.4 inches.

Interior, Tech, and Safety Features

If you’re looking for a more luxurious ride, the Ranger seems to have a more refined interior, while the Tacoma’s is a bit more rugged, which could seem clunky to some.

In terms of tech, the Ranger offers a fantastic suite, but what in includes depends on which trim package you go with. Some of the available tech features include an 8-inch voice-activated touch screen with Ford’s SYNC 3 system that connects to your smartphone, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, two smart-charging USB ports, Waze & Alexa connectivity, and FordPass Connect that allows you to start and stop your car from your phone, get roadside assistance, check your vehicle diagnostics, and connect to a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot for up to 10 different devices at once, even using it up to 50 ft. outside the vehicle.

Safety wise, the Ranger offers its available Co-Pilot 360 safety suite of tech, which includes a lane keeping system, adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning with brake support, blind spot monitoring, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, rear view camera, and auto-beam headlamps.

The Tacoma offers some similar features including two USB 2.0 ports, its Entune Audio system with 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, integrated navigation, and wireless smartphone charging (on top trim packages). Tacoma offers its own safety suite, Toyota Safety Sense, that includes pre-collision pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, auto-adjust cruise control, and start-stop technology.
